ABSTRACT
This chapter is a very short summary of the development of trade unions in Britain. Our intention here is to set out the history of trade unions only in relation to three main areas: trade unions and the law; the political consciousness of trade unions in the UK; and the main changes that have occurred in unionization. Although this is a limited account of union development, knowledge of these areas will inform our discussions in succeeding chapters.
