ABSTRACT

Perhaps one of the chief reasons people take on a coach or mentor is for help in the subject area of this chapter – deciding what to do. Sensing that one is at a crossroads or a roundabout can lead individuals to seek help in choosing the right road ahead. Being on the horns of a dilemma is painful and deciding one way or the other can be a relief. The people we are helping may be faced with too few choices or too many. Sometimes we need to help them think about other options in order to loosen the tyranny of the current situation. On other occasions, they may be paralysed by too much choice, and we need to find ways of helping them to focus down on one path. Acting or not acting is another way the decision can be presented, and it is well to remember that there are times when, paradoxically, the status quo is the way forward.
