ABSTRACT

Upon completion of this chapter, the reader should be able to:

describe the relationship between the tourism industry and tourist destinations

explain the role of place and community in influencing the context and pursuit of sustainable tourism in destinations

discuss potential tourism outcomes for tourist destinations using the broad context model of destination development scenarios

identify and assess the sustainability contexts and issues that are associated with different types of tourist destinations, including tourism cities, other large urban areas, the urban-rural fringe, protected areas, indigenous territories and small islands

assess the distinctive qualities of special events that influence the sustainability issue and

evaluate the problems associated with applying quality control mechanisms such as accreditation to destinations and the effectiveness in particular of relevant efforts by Green Globe 21.
