ABSTRACT

The last golden age of the interactive narrative adventure game was in the mid to late-1990s. For several years after that, the video game industry was dominated by action games, with relatively few sophisticated interactive narratives being produced. This chapter uses a combination of newer games and classic interactive narratives for the case studies. Each case study answers the following questions: Is the program a typical example of its genre or is it unusual? Who commissioned, developed, and wrote the program? What was the preproduction process? and Response to the Project. Did the program achieve its goals? Was it a critical and/or commercial success? The case studies are documented with script examples, screen shots, and flowcharts. Additional script samples and other material, including color screen shots and working demos, are available for many of the programs in section of the Writing for Multimedia and the Web CD-ROM.
