ABSTRACT

The producers of Amped 3 wanted to stick with realistic snowboarding game play that had been successful in the previous releases of the games, but they wanted to add something “different.” Amped 3 was produced by Indie Built, Inc. Indie Built was founded in 1983 under the name Access Software. Writer Conners' goal on Amped 3 was to add story elements to a snowboarding simulation. These story elements had to appeal to its core audience and add to the fun of the game without restricting the snowboarding sim activities. The way the Amped 3 writer is using the term “backstory,” he is referring to the main story of the game. But because the main focus of the game is snowboarding, in this context the main story is more of a backstory that provides context for the snowboarding and the other story challenges. An unusual element in Amped 3 is that the character telling the story also controls style of presentation.
