The second concept is that of ‘contingency’. This suggests that the appropriate interventions will depend on the circumstances of the organization; there will not be a best practice which is applicable to all situations. Where these two concepts of interventions and contingency come together is in the need for alignment. A critical role for the people development professional is to ensure that the resources committed to the learning, training and development effort reflect and reinforce business priorities. As the third of our nine propositions states:
