ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the final proposition, which is set out below. It covers an important topic: ‘evaluating training’ and ‘assessing learning’ were both identified in the research outlined in Chapter 5 (p. 97) as significant challenges facing people development professionals. We will describe some important work in progress, but offer less firm conclusions or recommendations than in other parts of the book. As a profession, our ideas on measuring value have left much to be desired. There have, however, been exceptions and some excellent work is starting to emerge; much of this is built round an understanding of how stakeholders perceive the value that learning brings to the organization.
