ABSTRACT
A typical LED is in a domed plastic package, with a rim. There are two terminal wires at the bottom. Usually, though not always, the cathode wire is shorter than the anode wire.
Another way to tell cathode from anode is to look at the rim (if the LED has one). The rim is flat on the side nearer the cathode wire.
