The history of Quality Standards
Quality used to be about making sure that the product was right and with an emphasis on the manufacturer being required to produce something that could be inspected against a specific dimension or criterion. The prod uct was then considered acceptable, or had to be reworked to become acceptable, or had to be scrapped (which could be very expensive). When things went wrong it was usual to blame the craftsmen (e.g. welders, painters, typists, etc.)!
