Fitting using hand skills
The bench fitter is one of the most skilled tradesmen in mechanical engineering. Bench fitting involves using hand tools for hand-shaping and fine-finishing of components, so that they can be assembled with precision. Typical components assembled by fitters include machine parts, measuring devices and work-setting fixtures. The fitters’ work can also involve hand-making individual parts as required. Fitters use simple tools such as files, saws, hammers and punches; they also use light machine tools such as drilling machines and shapers. The bench fitter is based at a workbench fitted with a vice and usually has access to a surface plate for marking out workpieces.
