Managing the people aspects of implementation
In this chapter we will look at the pivotal role of line managers in implementing change and revitalizing the organization. Changing times provide multiple challenges for managers. Not only do they have to navigate change for themselves but also all managers need to know how to guide people through change so that ‘business as usual’ can be effectively transformed into the new ‘way we do things around here’. Managers are often caught in the so-called ‘coronary sandwich’ – where they are subject to pressures from above and below. Not only are they expected to implement change, when they may not have been involved in its planning, they are also expected to manage their teams through the process, coach and develop others, deal with ever-increasing workloads, possibly integrate new teams and technologies, engage hearts and minds and maintain morale – and do what many managers consider the ‘day job’ as well.
