ABSTRACT

In the five examples we have studied it is possible to see how the more or less successful answer to a social question had been translated into a new spatial concept. Progressively abandoning any reference to the city, ordinary buildings such as houses were treated as a monument or a single object. This evolution, which developed in parallel with important transformations in the European economy, was simultaneously a consequence of these changes and one of the factors that promote them, to the extent that architecture, in conditioning the inhabitant’s everyday life, accentuates and accelerates social transformations.
