Monitoring

Monitoring, often called ‘foldback’, is what we use to enable the artists to hear what they need to when on the stage so that they can perform correctly and in time with other artists or any sound or music being played such as backing tracks. ThePA systemmay be a fair distance away from them and what they hear from this will be mainly reflections from the opposite wall, which will have a delay due to the sound traveling there and back. This is not a good source of reference, so artists have a more direct way of hearing the sound using speakers on the stage facing them or in-ear monitors similar to the type used with personal stereos. Vocalists particularly need a good level of their own voice to be audible to them as it can be very difficult to pitch correctly if you can’t hear your own voice, such as in front of a loud band.
