Connections – Plugs, sockets and cables
The many pieces of equipment used to put a show together almost certainly have to be linked in some way to other components or systems. At present, most of this is done using cables and connectors (some wireless connections are used of course). Luckily, this is one area where there isn’t too much of a problem with manufacturers trying to use their own proprietary systems, so something of an industry standard exists. Globally, mains electricity plugs and sockets may vary
but the mains input to the equipment is generally of a similar standard. Instrument and microphone connections are standard-
ized, as are the connections for mixers, processing gear and speakers. This chapter is designed to show you the main
connector types used and their most popular uses.
