Introduction to Part C
The current (2004) edition of Approved Document C became operable on 1 December 2004 with the coming into force of the Building (Amendment) Regulations 2004 (SI 2004/1465). It replaced the 1992 edition (which related to the Building Regulations 1991). Since 1992 there have been several changes relevant to the subject matter covered by Part C. British Standards are being replaced by European ones, the number of regions needing protection from radon has increased, and increased levels of insulation mean that greater consideration needs to be given to condensation risks. The most significant changes concerned contaminated land due to new regulations made under Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This in turn meant that the relevant technical guidance for Building Regulations needed to be revised.
