ABSTRACT

As the postproduction phase nears completion, elements (units) are mixed-down to premixes (predub). Premixes are developed independently for each of the stems. They are designed to provide organization, reduce track counts, and simplify the final mix process by isolating those elements that may require special treatment or cause conflict. Sound effect elements are mixed-down to multiple eight-channel premixes, reflecting an organization scheme unique to each project. Typical SFX premixes include grouped hard effects, designed effects, Foley props, Foley footsteps, and ambience. Music submixes are created to separate the

orchestral, synthesized, rhythmic, harmonic, melodic, solo, and bass elements. Dialog tracks are prepared individually by character. When developing the premixes, decisions regarding panning, leveling, and signal processing decisions are limited to only those that facilitate the final mix process.
