ABSTRACT
“If you want to make a movie and you have a dream, you do whatever you can to get it made. And if you have that kind of perseverance, the films will ring true because they are such an honest effort. It becomes a part of your life. If you follow through, usually those kind of films are the ones that surprise people out of left field. And you can look at Slacker or Crumb, In the Company of Men, as just a few. Movies like Safe, Welcome to the Dollhouse, all of these people put these movies together on shoestrings and had tremendous success and launched careers. But it was probably the worst nightmare of their lives getting the money for the movies. It seemed to make the filmmaking even better because they had to be more creative.”
