ABSTRACT

Most permanent theatre companies use stock decking units to decrease the cost of using platforms. The most common size for a platform is the 4x8, because that is the size of a sheet of plywood. It is often cost effective to have some other stock sizes too, such as 2x8 and/or 4x4. These dimensions are a good fit with a 4x8. You may find that your particular theatre benefits from some other types as well. Some groups like to use a smaller size like 3x4 or 3x6. Unless you have a tiny door to fit through, or some other site-specific problem, it may be best to stick with the 4x8 size and its relatives. A prudent designer will consider the use of standard units in designing a show, so as to reduce the cost of construction. Directors like platforms because they create different levels between actors, and you will have many encounters with decking over a lifetime in show business.
