This coping cycle for the individual is an important element of any change management process and in many ways is central. See Figure 4.2.

When you contribute to change management programmes you will need to recognise that both performance and self-esteem are likely to drop during the early stages of the programme. In a successful change programme, as the programme progresses the workforce may feel a tremendous sense of liberation as their ideas and potential contribution to the organisation are recognised for the first time. In a virtuous circle, shown in Figure 4.3, this steep rise in self-esteem can lead to improved performance and speed of implementation.
