ABSTRACT
Present breeds of fowl originate from wild or jungle birds and there is evidence that the prevalence of cock fighting in the past contributed to the various breeds and their general distribution. Breeders invariably take into account the qualities best suited to their requirements or market. Although there are many dual-purpose breeds, in the main they seek either egg production or meat-bearing types. Modern methods of poultry-rearing have revolutionized the market and, all too often, weight and tender flesh are sought at the expense of flavour.
