ABSTRACT

Venice is truly unique – an irreplaceable resource. Here we see a city without the problems of the motor car; this is due largely to the city’s location on a cluster of low-lying islands in the middle of an extensive shallow lagoon. Venice has few rivals in its wealth of historic buildings and art treasures. However, it is not so much individual attractions that define this city’s appeal, as its waterland setting and townscape which have changed remarkably little over the centuries. We need to remember that Venice is not just this historic island-city, but also includes a sprawl of industrial suburbs on the mainland, and it is here that most Venetians actually live and work.
