Food legislation and enforcement in EU member states
The framework and reasons for EU foodstuffs legislation has been discussed in Chapter 1. The focus in this chapter is on how the related literature views existing food legislation and enforcement in member states. The countries considered here are the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The purpose for choosing these countries is that they are key players in influencing the development of food safety within the Community. It will also become self-evident that each country approaches the subjects of food safety, consumer protection and enforcement in different ways, while at the same time seeking to ensure the provision of safe food. Further discussion of these issues as applied in practice is presented in Chapter 3.
