A Successful Ascent Large-scale mountain expeditions require preparations that usually begin at least 12 months in advance of the climb. The time scales will vary according to the difficulty of the expedition (i.e., is it local, within the same country, visiting another country, in hazardous terrain, logistically difficult), but the following is a typical planning schedule:
