ABSTRACT

Since the time when primitive men still huddled in caves earth worship has been at the centre of pagan ritual. In the absence of scientific knowledge it was easy to imagine earthquakes and volcanoes as the handiwork of gods. All cultures derive from this common past and the vestiges of paganism are rarely far beneath the surface. However, never before has such a faith pervaded a secular democracy as thoroughly as environmentalism – modern man’s earth worship – has today.
