Procedures for practice
Every museum needs a policy for limiting the light exposure of exhibits and ensuring adequate illumination for safe use of the building. The first section of this chapter gives a pro forma for such a policy which is broadly in line with the recommended practice documents listed in the Bibliography. It is intended that this pro forma could form the basis of a lighting brief for a new museum, or for renovation of an existing museum. Alternatively, it could provide a basis for a museum’s in-house lighting policy, or for instructions to an exhibition designer. Whichever way it may be used, it is recognized that the institution concerned will need to adapt the document to suit its own circumstances. The aim of this pro forma has been to provide a comprehensive coverage of museum lighting issues, so that any institution that uses it will be alerted to the full range of lighting concerns.
