ABSTRACT

It is vital that the design for the lighting, both natural and artificial, relates to and informs the structure to provide integrity and clarity.

The strategy for early twentieth century structures was developed by the imperative of daylighting, the structure itself and its configuration which was designed to serve the function of the space. This was particularly evident in the roof forms developed for our factories, designed to maximize the entry of natural light and minimize the adverse effects of sunlight and sky glare.
