ABSTRACT
The analog printing process offers the photographer countless ways of interpreting what has been recorded on film. It is not a mechanical process of simply translating what is on the negative into a print. The negative is a point of departure. It provides the photographer with the raw material to prepare the final product. If nine different photographers were given the same negative to print, the chances are that nine different renditions would be made. Ansel Adams said that “the negative is like a musical score and the print is the performance.” When the photographer makes a print from the negative, it begins a life of its own.
