Facing Our Fears
Just as I was starting work on this book, I had the most incredible opportunity to learn more about the nature of fear in a chaotic world. I was awakened at 2 a.m. to discover I was experiencing my first hurricane. As I looked out the fiercely shaking sliding glass doors, I observed what can be described only as complete chaos. A lO-foot-high hedge was being blown almost flat to the ground, and it appeared to be raining sideways. The howl was deafening. The walls were shaking so hard a large heavy painting was pulled off the wall, hooks and alL By the next morning, thousands of trees had been uprooted, frequently damaging or destroying homes as they fell.
