Introduction Lifts are a critical element in most people's use of a building. They convey much more than just disabled people, often overcoming travel distances that would defeat all but the fittest members of the population. If it is possible to avoid the installation of a mechanical lifting device (for instance, by installing a ramp) then do so - mechanical devices need regular servicing and will inevitably have periods out of service and be subject to vandalism. If it is possible to install a lift inside rather than outside then, again, do so-water and dirt will penetrate the best insulated of mechanisms, and outdoor products will require more frequent maintenance and are at a higher risk of vandalism.
