Fire and Emergency Escape Procedures
Associated information For information on fire doors and electromagnetic holdback devices, refer to Chapter 14.
Introduction Fire and emergency escape procedures are often cited by building managers and owners as reasons for the exclusion of disabled people. There are situations in buildings in which it would be unsafe to have people with reduced mobility, reduced sensory ability or with learning difficulties. It could be both unsafe for the disabled person and their presence could add increased risk for other occupants. However, it is rare that these situations could not be overcome with either a physical adaptation to the building and/or a change in the management of people and spaces within the building.
