ABSTRACT

The Enhanced Other Networks (EON) function allows data to be shared among affiliated networks. Features that may be transmitted using EON for other program services are: Alternate Frequencies, Program Item Number (PIN), and Program Service Name, Program Type code (PTY), Traffic Announcement, Traffic Program, and Linkage. EON features are utilized by EON-equipped consumer receivers in the following ways: automatic updating of receiver memory, receive service broadcasts from other networks, and linkage information. If a transmitter cross-references to more than one traffic program with a different Program Identification code via the EON feature, the time between two different references via the type 14B group has to be longer than two seconds. At the time of development of the EON feature, no provision was made for automatic retuning for PTY or PIN information such as exists for EON TA. While the use of EON is not straight forward for the US broadcast infrastructure, there are many advantages to its use.
