Job casting and job briefing

The first decision to be made is what to include and what to exclude in the job: which is the province of Job Casting. For many managers this has scarcely been seen as a problem. The various elements are put together on the basis of logical convenience or the shape of the job is taken from traditional practice. Take two cases, a sales representative and a hospital physician. The duties of the former typically include opening up new contacts, persuading customers about the merits of the company's products, administering any orders, ensuring delivery is as scheduled and checking that the customer is satisfied with what is received. In the case of the hospital physician the position seems equally clear-cut. The physician 'owns' given patients, secures a bed for them and is responsible for both their treatment and discharge when that treatment has been completed.
