ABSTRACT
Adam was designing them by 1753 [12]. As Laugier’s essay was not published in English until 1755, it seems that Adam’s interest arose independently. His interest probably owes most to his love of variety and to his romantic streak. It is no more surprising to find him taking an early interest in thatched work than it is to find him taking an early interest in classical, castle-style or Gothic work.
