What's in a Metaphor?
Asking what's in a metaphor is like asking what's in a picture, a story; or a feeling. You have to close your eyes and use your senses and your imagination to get at the answer. You must see the picture the metaphor creates in your head, hear the sounds it produces, smell the scent of the images it presents, and touch them with the fingers of your mind. That's what makes metaphors so rich. To use the words of a professor I once knew, "metaphors are laced with truths unencumbered by facts."
