Multi-storey buildings and towers

There is more to this, though, than simply imposing increased vertical loads on the supports of the buildings that are lower down in the stack. It is also necessary to ensure lateral stability. The Panch Mahall at Fatehpur Sikri [15.1] must have almost the maximum number of storeys at which this can be done by relying solely on accurate cutting and assembly of monolithic columns and beams and on gravitational resistance to any tilting of the columns.1 In taller buildings it must be ensured by adequate stiffness in bending and shear throughout the height.
