ABSTRACT
Vivid new characters from computer games-characters like Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Lara Croft, Freddie Fish, and Carmen Sandiego-have begun to take their place alongside other icons of popular culture like Dick Tracy and Mickey Mouse. The day may not be far off when a character created for a website or a wireless game joins their ranks. Already at least one character from the world of smart toys has achieved celebrity status-the furry space alien who goes by the name of Furby.
