ABSTRACT
In order to understand the role of knowledge and learning in economic development, it is useful to make a distinction between different kinds of knowledge. It is especially important to make a distinction between knowledge as more or less complex information, and knowledge as a set of skills and competences. The mode of formation and distribution of knowledge differs and later we shall see how the codification of knowledge has different conditions and implications for the two main categories.
