ABSTRACT

In visual effects, working with live-action footage and matte paintings is commonplace, and these elements are referred to as ‘background plates’ in the context of CG. The first step to working with a live-action plate involves digitizing the footage via a process called telecine, which at its most basic involves each frame being scanned and saved. However, during this process intricate color correction often takes place. This footage then forms the background plate on top of which CG elements are placed.
