ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a discussion of the reverse process: transferring video images to film. This technology falls into two categories: operational processes servicing existing product distribution requirements and technology targeted toward integrated film-video production and post-production. Current video-to-film technology provides the ability to convert existing 525 or 625 line-per-frame composite or component video to 16mm or 35mm color or black-and-white film. There are a number of applications for the video-to-film technology. The chapter describes five of them, namely, film prints for foreign markets; contractual requirements; dailies for sound-scoring stages; slides; and storyboards, presentations, and archives. It discusses the points should be considered when planning a video-to-film transfer. The video source material should be of the highest available quality. In particular, the video should be shot with professional-quality video cameras operating at light levels that allow them to produce their optimum exposure and lowest video noise.
