ABSTRACT

As increasingly more people join the ranks of the computer literate, they are discovering that they don't always need or want to be tethered to the desktop computer in their home or office. Having the ability to surf the Internet, check e-mail, access files, and participate in live chats or online seminars from locations other than the work station will become a normal way of life. Because of an increase in mobile workers 68and the remote use of the Internet, GartnerGroup's Dataquest forecasts that the U.S. wireless data market will grow to about 36 million people by the year 2003. In the late 1990s, the Yankee Group (https://www.yankeegroup.com" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">www.yankeegroup.com) reported that one-third of the workforce was already mobile, spending 20 percent or more of their time away from the primary workplace.
