ABSTRACT

A number of art papers may eventually be found to be suitable for printing in gumoil. Gumoil printing, to be successful, requires paper with certain characteristics. One of these is the paper's weight. It is possible to print gumoil images on (unsized) stretched canvas and other materials with absorbent surfaces such as unglazed ceramic or unfinished wood and its derivatives, although none, so far, is as satisfactory as paper. In choosing a material, bear in mind that the process demands a surface that not only will accept the wetness associated with coating and developing but must also be able to withstand marathon washing and bleaching, without which gumoil printing cannot be done. Prior to coating the paper, the gum and sensitizer should be thoroughly mixed. It is advisable to prepare only enough sensitized gum to require a few days storage in the refrigerator, but out of reach of innocent hands.
