ABSTRACT

Ultraviolet-transmissible (UVT) plastic permits more rapid exposure times and is a plus for photographers who also print on hand-coated Vandyke and cyanotype papers. Gross underexposure of a transparency will leave the gum so soft that it will all slide off during water development. Consistency is the advantage because a carefully kept record of times and distance of the bulb from the frame should make a successful latent gum print reproducible. The best commercial contact printing frame is manufactured by The Gravity Works company and is available through suppliers. Once the frame is taken outside and set down in bright sunlight, it is too late to move the film or paper around. The frame may be propped on a chair, against a wall, or on a table so long as the positioning permits the sandwich of film and paper to be at right angles to the most direct rays of the sun as they strike the earth.
