ABSTRACT
Due to their longevity as a building type, libraries are sub-
ject to much stress to keep themselves up-to-date. New media and organizational demands require changes in the use of space and to the building fabric. Alteration to a library is always a challenge and is resisted by two significant
forces – the structure itself and the critical mass of the existing collection and the staff that service it. Managers, if they wish to implement effective change, need to address both
sides of the equation with fortitude. Planning and adroit financial forecasting are essential to
smooth renovation. Plans are needed to co-ordinate space
usage, physical change and personnel. Unlike the design of a new facility, renovation is often compromised by some unexpected occurrence: hence flexibility of outlook, action and resources is needed.
