In 1998, ironically as what later became known as the ‘Internet Bubble’ gathered pace, one of the authors finally became convinced about the precise role of information and communications technologies (IT) in organizations. Being an academic he needed a lot of valid, empirical evidence, a study rigorously and objectively carried out, which compared like with like, which carried out sampling procedures and statistical analysis correctly, and which produced very strong pointers as to what was, and was not the case. As a matter of fact, it was something he already knew in his bones, and something that the other two authors had lived with for more years than they cared to remember in their consulting and managerial work.
