The main problem areas are the increased volume of data that needs to be delivered for multimedia and the requirements for real time and predictable data transfers. For many existing systems, the bandwidth offered is only just sufficient for data traffic, let alone MPEG movies. As a result, multimedia is often not implemented on LANs that could potentially support the technology. The real-time aspects are very important: who wants to watch a movie and hear the speech a second later because someone else on the network was copying a file?
