Digital video broadcasting

Many existing satellite systems are already capable of digital transmission and all that is needed to start a DVB service is a change to the data uploaded to the satellite and the replacement or adaption of the satellite receiver (the set top box) to enable the decoding of digital transmissions. Using the data compression techniques pro­ vided by MPEG2, the adopted standard for DVB compression, a single satellite could provide several hundred television channels.
