ABSTRACT

This chapter slowly introduces skills used by experienced Photoshop professionals, and builds your basic layer skills to include working with multiple layers at a faster pace. Open Chapter 05/Manhattan.psd, a file with only a background layer. An image can only have one background layer, and is always on the bottom in italics. Background layers are rarely used and more of a nuisance as most everyone has to convert them to a floating layer. Double-click on the italic background layer and rename it to the default layer 0. Now you can move the layer, and have transparency if you use the eraser. After converting thousands of background layers to non italics you will agree with me that background layers can be simulated by locking a layer, and are not needed in Photoshop.
