Budgeting for documentaries
The first factor which has an effect on the budget is the agreement under which the film is being produced. The union and the Employers’ Association have signed a freelance production agreement. Part of this agreement covers the crew rates for feature films, and there is a separate scale of rates for documentary productions. This agreement defines the terms and conditions under which the crews will work and the production will be run. These terms are important because of their budgetary implications, and particularly because they include information about working hours, overtime rates, travelling conditions, quality of accommodation, health and safety, and the numerous other items which concern the welfare of working crews.
