ABSTRACT

The history of office layout design has reflected changing fashions in work process design and organizational development. The freeform, seemingly chaotic, layout forms of Biirolandschaft were in reality the outcome of careful analysis of data flows and organizational relationships. The absorption ofinformation and communications technology during the 1980s resulted in the superimposing of new technology on traditional ways of organizing, managing and accommodating office functions. Now that the office is automated the 1990s has become a period to re-evaluate the processes ofwork and 'reinvent' the 'workplace'.
