Imagine that every time you developed a product, the technologies that you needed were sitting on a shelf, like modular building blocks needmg only to be selected and integrated with each other. Imagine that these were the best technologies, state-of-the-art, fully tested and debugged. Moreover, they were proprietary, well protected by patents, trade secrecy, and applications know-how only you fully possessed. In short, imagine that technical uncertainty had been reduced to a bare minimum, to issues of how well you exploit your technology position, not whether it will do what is needed or whether competitors may have better technology.
